Health NZ E-cigarette Trial Results

The tests undertaken by the Clinical Trials Research Unit at Auckland University have been completed, and the results show that the e-cigarette “is effective in relieving smokers’ cravings for a tobacco cigarette”. Of course, we already knew that :) Here’s the Media Release from Health NZ:

The Ruyan® electronic cigarette, which provides nicotine for inhalation in the form of a harmless mist, is effective in relieving smokers’ cravings for a tobacco cigarette, according to New Zealand researchers.

Choosing between it and the Nicorette inhaler already on sale, two thirds of smokers would recommend it to a friend, two thirds liked its taste better, and over half would prefer it for stopping smoking, says Dr Murray Laugesen, a co-investigator in a study just completed at the Clinical Trials Research Unit, University of Auckland.

In this randomised double-blind study, 40 smokers tested different strengths of e-cigarette on different days. On its first day of use, the e-cigarette relieved cravings to smoke, though not as fully as the smoker’s usual brand of cigarette.

After one session smoking the Ruyan® e-cigarette, cravings began to lessen within five minutes, with a maximum reduction at 15 minutes. Cravings remained lower for at least one hour. No harmful effects were reported during one day’s use.

The study was designed and completed in New Zealand, and funded by the manufacturer, Ruyan Holdings Ltd, Beijing, through Health New Zealand Ltd, which specializes in testing alternatives to tobacco cigarettes. More data will be available in a few weeks and further research is planned for later in 2008.

  2. No problem Silver :) Murray is doing some fantastic work for smokers in NZ - it’s awesome that he can see the very real benefits of e-cigarettes, unlike some *coughMarkPeck* people who should be able to apply at least some very basic logic - see: TV3 Video Clip. He’s the guy who says that you’re simply replacing one thing with another . . . I feel another article coming on :)

  3. What he actually says is that “replacing a smoking habit with another smoking habit” is not a good thing. Obviously he doesn’t know what he’s on about since technically the E-cigarette does not constitute a ’smoking’ habit as such.

A habit it may be, but ’smoke’ (as one gets with an ‘analogue’, aka regular, cigarette), it definitely ain’t !

Good on ya Mark, looking forward to it already ;-) !

  4. My position is that it’s about “harm reduction”. Smokers will smoke anyway, so if they have a healthy substitute, surely that’s reducing the harm associated with smoking?

I’m not sure that I should have a rant about Mark Peck’s ignorance - it might just land me in trouble :) It does seem sad though, that such an organisation, with so much potential to do good stuff is not interested in the reduction of harm to existing smokers, or that they can just toss it off like some “fad” with no real substance.

I see that the first priority of the Smokefree Coalition is to increase the price of cigarettes - now I wonder why that might be? Does some of that tax money go straight to organisations like the Smokefree Coalition? I do wonder.

Well, if that’s their goal, I will snub them and reduce my costs considerably via e-smoking. They won’t get a cent from me! MUAHAHAHA!
